I have been trying to think back over my life and figure out why I can't remember such an amazing book. I am sure I have had to read it in seminary or religion class in college, but nothing comes to mind. Of course in seminary at least, I might have been a little to busy sleeping (it was early morning), or razzing the teacher in any possible way (I didn't like her very much). Looking back I wasn't a very nice person to her. I sure wish I would have had the spirituality and strength of the youth today. Anyway, that is not what I was writing on. The book I am talking about is the Doctrine & Covenants.
Sunday I decided to read the Doctrine & Covenants. There are 138 chapters, so I figured if I read 10 a day I could finish it in 2 weeks. But...I couldn't put it down. I love it. I love the way it is different from other scripture, in that the language is so clear and easy to understand. I love that it speaks of our time and the church that I am part of right now. I love that even though Christ most of the time is speaking to Joseph Smith or Oliver Cowdery or others; I am marking a million scriptures because it seems like he is speaking to me. Shawn said he has read it. I asked him if he knew that in the first 12 chapters that repeats the same five verses, four times. The ones that say "A marvelous work & wonder is about to come forth...The field is white already to harvest...knock & it will be opened". Yep, he says..."that is the missionary scripture in chapter 4", and he is right but is also repeated in chapter 6, 11 & 12. I kept thinking I had read this chapter, until I realized it was being repeated. I would say that is some pretty important stuff.
I do not want to put it down, unfortunately, there is life to deal with; but thanks to the scriptures on my phone & kindle, I can read while I am waiting for things like therapy and gymnastics. I am ahead of schedule on chapter 28, and can't wait for the next chance I get to read.
